SCHIAVO CASE REVEALS MORAL PRIORITIES
03.24.05 (10:16 am)   [edit]

Mention Terri Schiavo to left-wing Christians and feminists and immediately they panic.

That’s because they find it impossible to think about euthanasia without first thinking about abortion.

And anything that might jeopardize their precious right to abort a child must be resisted at all cost.  Tragically, as this case has revealed, even when the specter of domestic violence is raised, it is not enough to get the ‘pro-women’ advocates to take Terri’s side.  Consider the following.

The most left-wing Catholic publications in the nation are the National Catholic Reporter and Commonwealth.  Neither is on Terri’s side, and both have taken positions on euthanasia that are directly contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Similarly, Pax Christi, the nation’s leading Catholic pacifist organization, is outraged over the condition of health care, but it has nothing to say about the condition of Terri’s health.

Those looking for wisdom about this issue from the Catholic Theological Society of America had better look elsewhere: it’s too busy defending the non-Catholic teachings of a so-called Catholic theologian whom the Vatican recently disciplined.

Catholics Speak Out and Catholics for a Free Choice are both dissident groups whose latest musings involve women’s ordination and a condemnation of the Vatican; neither has spoken to the Schiavo case.

Among Protestants, the National Council of Churches has been predictably silent on this issue, preferring to opine on the ‘immorality’ of the federal budget.

The latest issue for the Feminist Majority is not why the police didn’t pursue a homicide investigation against Michael Schiavo—even though a police report listed homicide the night they found Terri.

No, their latest issue is the need to tell young girls that abstinence doesn’t work.

Meanwhile, the National Organization for Women is too busy celebrating gay marriage to be worried about a woman whose cheating husband allegedly asked Terri’s nurses, ‘When is that bitch gonna die?'

I think the National Organization for Women is more conerned with gay marriage because that's an issue that needs to be discussed. Terri Schiavo's situation is a personal family matter with no relevance to the public. You know that, I know that....so stop being bitter.

Lynn,

Point well made. Thank you for your insight.

Jeromee, Can't you see why forced euthanasia could mean problems for society in the future? Maybe yours? Maybe sooner than you think? is it too painful to think about?

It's not painful to think about at all, mostly because it'll never happen. Terri isn't being subjected to forced euthanasia. It was her decision, and her husband is making sure she gets what she asked for. The only problem society would face is if the government started making personal family decisions.

Jeromee

i am afraid that you are a sad sad sick little mind. Wake up and quit with the TV watching, its rotting your few remaining brains. If you can't come up with something MUCH better, then don't bother.

You'll be talking to the Hand.

Well, I don't get my facts from watching television, nor do I try and twist the truth like you do to make a point out of....nothing, really. I think it's safe to assume that you're the one with no brains. You're posting lies on your blog for everyone to read, you refuse to admit your absolutely wrong in all your assertions, and you told me to talk to the hand. I don't know any respected individuals who would every say anything so ridiculous.

What makes you hate? Did Christ teach you to abhor anyone who doesn't adhere to your beliefs? And what is your point anyway? I take it you are a right-wing Christian, presumably Protestant. And, I think it's plain to see that euthanasia and abortion are two different issues, and I don't see how you or anyone else could draw a comparison. Euthanasia has come about because modern medical technology has the ability to extend life beyond the point where it is meaningful. Abortion is a woman who doesn't think she can take care of her unborn child, or doesn't want to try. Anyway, no one asked to be born in the first place. And it's not necessarily forced euthanasia if you haven't been able to communicate or even swallow on your own for over a decade. For me that "forced euthanasia" means that when I'm old and ready to die, I don't have to be stuck in a hospital with tubes in every orifice until I finally shuffle off the mortal coil, years later, leaving behind huge medical bills for my family to die trying to pay, since social security will be moot by then. So it goes.

Wait a tic.. people are talking homicide.... what she did was tantamount to suicide... Terri was bulimic... and it was the result of her bulimia that caused her condition. Funny the media and everyone has just seemed to forget that little tid bit of info. As the media often does. Its a "Right To Life" issue or " Euthinasia" issue. Not some stupid girl puked herself to brain damage. I hate that she has gone through this I really do... but she brought it all on herself Im afraid.

JEROMME YOU ARE THIS FAR FROM BEING BANNED AS A CRANK.

If you feel you need to ban me, I respect that. It is your blog, after all. It's very like a Republican to prevent the opposition from having their say. Bush has done it for years. I'm in no way hostile to you, and I still respect you as a person. I'm just commenting on the blog you posted for public viewing. If you don't want people commenting on what you write, don't write it.

Sorry, I've been looking through my bible all weekend and I can't find anything about this "talking to the hand". Is this a direct teaching of Christ, or is it one of those things you've interpreted on your own?

Either way, it doesn't _seem_ very christian. Then again, you don't _seem_ very christian at all in your response to jeromee.

But hey, ban me too. That's what Jesus would do, right?

Incidentally, Lynn, you mean "forced euthanasia for Floridians", right? Because in Texas and in several other states, there is forced euthanasia for people in a persistent vegetative state who don't have medical insurance.

For some reason, you don't include them in you moral priorities.

Jeromee, you're not banned, yet. But, this blog hasn't the time or patience to suffer fools. Take this to heart when and if you formulate messages, don't waste my time.

M@: you are kidding right? if not you are dummer than Jeromee.

Look up Polemics. It is a Christians's duty to correct another Christian who is in error of herasy.

And by the way Jeromee, if you are not getting most or all of your"facts" from TV or other MASS MEDIA, then where do you get them? I have debated hundreds of times the same points, and they all come from the Leftist Cult of Death.

Uh, yes. I am dummer than jeromee. And guilty of herasy too.

Your having debated hundreds of times is plainly obvious -- your skillful rapier of rhetoric is quite keen. My question for you is how many times have you actually won those debates?

If your answer is "all of them", then my next question is: how did you do that, if you can't seem to make any points other than to accuse your opponents of stupidity?

Incidentally -- free advice here --your spelling would probably be a lot better if you tried reading a book or two.

And don't take the trouble to ban me; your blog doesn't merit another visit.

You're an idiot.

open M@

This is Jeromee's 1st, and I wish it had been the last, As even you can see, she/he neither completely read nor understood my article on Single sex marriage. She/he simply introduced themself as a foot in the mouth fool, much like yourself. You will know from now on that polemically, Catholics are required to correct others, Christian or not when they are in grave error or grave hereasy. We are not allowed to let others believe what they wish, we are to argue towards the Truth. As Catholics we are free to adopt anything in any religion that is true. But we are not to adopt that which is false. We are supposed to argue polemically to illuminate the Truth. That can be harsh, and can include personal demolishion of the hereatic. This is the Truth and the Tradition of the Catholic faith which is known round the world over.

I'm a guy, just FYI. Also, I never said I didn't get my facts from mass media, I just said I didn't get them from television. When I have free time throughout the day I get information from news sites, blogs, and other places. Where isn't really relevant, I think what is relevant is whether my facts are accurate, which they always are.

I did read your article on same sex marriage, and I called you an idiot because I can't believe you actually believed that stuff. The definition of "idiot" is "a foolish or stupid person," and in this instance I thought you were both. It's just hard for me to understand how people can be so bigoted and close minded.
